Kilmacolm New Community Centre

A competition-winning design for a new community centre in Kilmacolm, Renfrewshire has successfully breathed life into two previously unusable stone buildings. The internal interventions into each building have transformed them into up-to-date fully accessible facilities for community and commercial uses. The interior of the Community Centre is unrecognisable from its former use as a school building having become bright, transparent, inclusive and adaptable in its new guise.

The urban realm has been transformed by the creation of a new 'village square' which has created new public space in the village centre. This has improved the linkage between two shopping streets and it is destined to become a vibrant new hub for community activity which will reinforce Kilmacolm's enviable reputation as a desirable location to live.

The completed project is a perfect example of intelligent intervention into old buildings which ensures that the character of an existing building is enhanced as well as preserved.
