Projects

Ross House, Cornton Vale

Holmes was commissioned by Scottish Prison Service as architect and lead consultant for this unique project. The New Remand Centre is a pioneering project involving a new extension and conversion of existing facilities, providing much needed modern accommodation with secure supervision.

The main intervention is a new double height open plan milling space, offering remand prisoners a bright, welcoming environment. This central space infills a former open courtyard and links with existing wings of accommodation all of which has been upgraded, becoming a model for future prison service projects.

The result was well received by HM Inspector of Prisons and has achieved acclaim for being an exemplar of modern custodial design.
