With this competition entry, Holmes have opened up a contemporary dialogue between old and new. A solid block form is carved into and hollowed out, breaking the mass and scale of the development into one that sits more comfortably in its historic context.
A series of pitched gables, inspired by the gabled forms found throughout the town rise to form a bookend gateway to the harbour from Duke Street. Apartments have been rotated and orientated to maximise sea views, creating spacious, light filled accommodation with incredible views out to sea.
A regulated elevation treatment together with a familiar gabled form allows for ease of construction and excellent cost efficiency and provides a landmark building to help launch Whitehaven into the 21st Century.
