Architects Holmes Partnership, working in partnership with contractor Bovis Lend Lease has successfully handed over two primary schools to South Lanarkshire Council as part of a 3-year modernisation programme.
Greenhills Primary School and St Vincent’s Primary School in East Kilbride are schools 3 and 4 in a major framework agreement between South Lanarkshire Council and Bovis Lend Lease to provide 10 schools.
Holmes worked in partnership with SLC Housing and Technical Services, Education Department and the school headteachers to deliver high-quality, bespoke design solutions.
Greenhills Primary School
Greenhills Primary School is a single storey fully inclusive primary school providing integrated assisted needs and nursery education with the mainstream primary school. The school provides 9 classrooms (accommodates maximum 297 pupils), 4 assisted needs classrooms (accommodates maximum 40 pupils) and a 50/50 Nursery with supporting ancillary accommodation formed around large central open plan multi-purpose break out spaces and a central gym/assembly Hall.
The school was built as a 'tandem' build on adjacent grass amenity recreational area whilst the existing school remained in operation. Following transfer into the new school the existing building has been demolished and the site handed back to SLC.
Along with the new school on the site a separate building has been built to accommodate Integrated Children's Services Area Base and Education Resources Psychological Services to support the delivery of education services across SLC.
St. Vincent's Primary School
St. Vincent's Primary School is a mixed two/single storey building providing an integrated nursery and mainstream primary school. The school provides 10 classrooms (accommodates maximum 330 pupils) split over two floors with supporting ICT and ancillary accommodation linked to central open plan double height dining space, Library and general purpose area.
The school incorporates a new build facility for the well established Ballerup Nursery providing accommodation for 80 nursery pupils from age 0-5 in three classrooms. The nursery wing has been formed around an external courtyard garden with direct access from the 0-2 and 2-3 classrooms to facilitate the safe, controlled and easy break-out into a secure play area. The large 3-5 nursery room has been designed as two spaces with direct access from each out into secure play area which utilises a mixture of grass, blacktop and rubberised safety surfacing to provide a varied and safe environment assisting in nursery education curriculum.
