HOLMES TEAM ON FINAL SHORTLIST FOR SALTCOATS COMPETITION

12 January 2008

A design team from Holmes has made it to the final shortlist for a national competition to design a landmark housing development for a prime site in Saltcoats, North Ayrshire.

Team members Craig Heap, Ryan Holmes and Gavin Salt created a design concept which was selected, along with three others, from a total of 48 submissions. The RIAS competition, organised on behalf of McLaughlin Construction, the site owner, and Irvine Bay Urban Regeneration Company, sought “designs… which exploit the location and be a suitable landmark for this prominent location” and demonstrate “… high levels of environmental sustainability.”

The Holmes submission drew inspiration from the swelling waves and shimmering reflections of the sea and the vibrant colours of beach huts and boats. The design concept imagines a landmark development that is sympathetic to the streetscape, rising, like the crest of a wave, towards the ocean.

The overall winner of the competition will be announced in January.
