NORTHERN LIGHTS DESIGN COMPETITION ENTRY BY HOLMES'S STUART BAXTER IS SHORTLISTED

13 August 2008

A entry to an online design competition by Stuart Baxter, Associate in Holmes's Edinburgh office, has been shortlisted from over 150 entries.

The competition, run through the Line of Site website, called for entrants to envisage a unique observatory where visitors will be able to view the full majesty of the Northern Lights natural phenomenon. The imagined location was northern Norway, one of the best places to see the Lights.

Stuart's concept, which can be viewed by clicking here, involves a circular low profile rotating building which blends with the winter landscape. Set into the ground the highly insulated domed form is divided into 5 areas; an external observation space protected from wind by the building form, an internal viewing space with a glazed roof that can be walked on for cleaning, an observatory with a large telescope, living / working accommodation and sleeping areas. Roof canopies slide back to open the telescope to the night sky.

The Line of Site website is sponsored by ACO, Google and BD.
